Q.1 What is Organic?

The term refers to the way a food is grown, handled, and processed. These practices are meant to protect the environment. Produce must be grown without the use of most conventional pesticides, fertilizers that aren’t naturally made, sewage sludge, radiation, and genetically modified organisms.

Q.2 Do 'organic' and 'natural' mean the same thing?

No, “natural” and “organic” are not interchangeable terms. In general, “natural” on a food label means that it has no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. It does not refer to the methods or materials used to produce the food ingredients.

Q.3 Why Organic Food is better?

Organic food helps you on your path to becoming happier and healthier. Organics keep GMOs out of our food; supports a healthier farm lifestyle and a healthier community and are more nutrient rich and more flavourful.

Regardless of diet, organic foods are a smart priority. Opting for organic foods is an effectual choice for personal and planetary health. Buying organically grown food—free of harmful chemicals, bursting with more nutrition, taste, and sustainable sustenance—is a direct vote for immediate health and the hopeful future of generations to come.

Some indirect benefits of Organic Food:

  • Environmental enhancement and protection (and avoidance of future expenses to mitigate pollution). For example, higher prices of organic cash crops compensate for low financial returns of rotational periods which are necessary to build soil fertility;
  • Higher standards for animal welfare;
  • Avoidance of health risks to farmers due to inappropriate handling of pesticides (and avoidance of future medical expenses);
  • Rural development by generating additional farm employment and assuring a fair and sufficient income to producers.
Q.4 Does Organic Farming helps?

Organic Farming preserves our ecosystem: it supports eco-sustenance, relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control. It is basically farming in harmony with nature.

It is a method of farming that works at grass root level preserving the reproductive and regenerative capacity of the soil, good plant nutrition, and sound soil management, produce nutritious food rich in vitality which has resistance to diseases.

Q.5 How to identify whether your food is Organic?

A label helps you to identify whether the product is organic or not. Usually, an internationally recognized body certifies the organic products. An organic seal assures consumers of the quality and integrity of organic products.

Any product labelled as organic on the product description or packaging must be USDA certified. If it is certified, the producer may also use an official USDA Organic seal.

The USDA makes an exception for producers who sell less than Rs. 3,60,000 a year in organic foods. These producers must follow the guidelines for organic food production, but they do not need to go through the certification process. They can label their products as organic, but they may not use the official USDA Organic seal.

Q.6 What do different labels/terms on the Organic Food Packaging implies?

The following below mentioned terms to be seen while using the Organic Food:

  • 100 Percent Organic: All the ingredients are certified organic.
  • Organic: At least 95% of the ingredients are certified organic.
  • Made With Organic Ingredients: At least 70% of the ingredients are certified organic.

Other labels, such as “all-natural” and “farm-raised,” aren’t regulated, so they don’t mean much.

Q.7 What does Organic Label mean?

It is the term used to describe raw or processed agricultural products and ingredients that have been (a) organically grown (farmed) and (b) handled in compliance with the standards of April 2001, which have been fully enforced since October 2002.

These standards prohibit the use of:

  • Synthetic fertilizers and pesticides
  • Sewer sludge fertilizers
  • Genetic engineering
  • Growth hormones
  • Irradiation
  • Antibiotics
  • Artificial ingredients
  • Many synthetic additives
Q.8 Why does organic cost more?

The price of organic food is the true cost of growing. Organic farming is more labour and management intensive.

Organic farms are usually smaller than conventional farms and so do not benefit from the economies of scale that larger growers get.

Post-harvest handling of relatively small quantities of organic foods results in higher costs because of the mandatory segregation of organic and conventional produce, especially for processing and transportation.

Q.9 Organic food: Is it safer or more nutritious?

There is a growing body of evidence that shows some potential health benefits of organic foods when compared with conventionally grown foods.

Potential benefits include the following:

  • Studies have shown significant increase in some nutrients in organic produce. The best evidence of this is in certain types of flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties.
  • The feeding requirements for organic livestock farming, such as the primary use of grass and alfalfa for cattle, result in generally higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a kind of fat that is more heart healthy than other fats. These higher omega-3 fatty acids are found in organic meats, dairy and eggs.
  • Cadmium is a toxic chemical naturally found in soils and absorbed by plants. Studies have shown significantly lower cadmium levels in organic grains. The lower cadmium levels in organic grains may be related to the ban on synthetic fertilizers in Conventionally produced food may have a higher occurrence of bacteria resistant to antibiotic treatment.
  • Organic processed food contains no hydrogenated fat, whereas non-organic processed food does. Hydrogenated fat has been linked to heart disease — so choosing organic options can help to protect your heart.
  • Organic produce is lower in nitrates and higher in antioxidants than conventional food.
  • Organic food may go ‘off’ more quickly than non-organic produce. This is because organic fruit and vegetables do not contains artificial preservatives and are not irradiated.
